Canal and River Cruising in France
Cruising on the canals and waterways of France is a relaxing, timeless and unforgettable voyage. On board a floating hotel-barge the atmosphere is friendly, schedules are unhurried, and the passing scenery is sublime. Each day presents another unique opportunity for adventure as you cycle through the ever-changing countryside.
Over the years we have chartered a variety of hotel-barges to be our private floating hotel for six nights*. Each barge, whether for 6 or 24 passengers, is a masterpiece ofFrench or Dutch craftsmanship - comfortable, roomy, and well furnished, with the atmosphere of a country inn or charming B&B. There are typically restaurant, bar, library, and living room areas on the upper decks, as well as a sun deck with outside seating, colorful sun umbrellas, and bright flower boxes. All cabins have a private bathroom (shower and toilet), as well as a closet and drawers for personal effects, air conditioning and portholes or windows.
Cuisine: The barge kitchens can compete with the best of France's restaurants and the chefs are precious gems of the waterways. Breakfasts are continental affairs - awaken to the smell of fresh-brewing coffee, just baked bread and baskets of croissants. Lunches vary from delicious buffets to sumptuous picnics. Dinners are comprised of four and five course (and even more!) regional and national specialties, accompanied by selections of the celebrated local, regional, and national wine vintages.
Activities: There are endless cycling opportunities through the countryside of superb ancient fields and vineyards. Walking and running along the tow path or in the countryside are also favored, in addition to reading and relaxing and watching the landscape float by. Each itinerary can be customized to various interests – cycling, walking, golf, wine, cuisine, art, architecture, chocolate, history, and gardens.
Culture: There are planned daily excursions, with the barge's private minivan or small bus, to historic or cultural sites, and local and regional highlights, such as castles, villages, and monuments.
Options: Balloon trips are available depending on weather conditions. Setting out from a field adjacent to the barge, you ascend slowly to float across the vineyards, villages, chateaux and woodlands below.
Special note: These trips may only be reserved on a full charter basis (you must reserve the entire barge).
*Typical rates for the week range from $3,000 to $5,400 per person.
